Exit Interviews: Listen, Learn, Move Forward

An exit interview is a meeting between an employer and an employee who is leaving the company. Its purpose is to gather information about the employee’s experience with the company and reasons for leaving. Exit interviews can take different formats, such as in-person or virtual meetings, or written or online surveys.

Ideally, the exit interview is part of a well-structured offboarding process. To get unbiased feedback, the interview should be run by a neutral third party, such as an HR representative. Employees may not have a good relationship with their manager, so having someone else conduct the interview can encourage them to be more honest and open in their feedback.

The exit interview matters a great deal for how departing employees remember their time at the company. Take their feedback seriously and make the improvements it calls for.

Employees remember their first and last days at work, so make their exit as positive as you can.
